Assessments Begin with Quality Instruments

Infonex Malawi takes special pride in the effective design of classroom observation, interview and assessment instruments for qualitative and quantitative data collection. We have successfully developed, field tested, deployed and updated high-quality, nuanced tools – including digital tools on tablets – for education monitoring and evaluation, including:

  • 3 national assessments (EGRAs) of learner reading skills in Standards 1-4
  • 2 national assessments of teacher instruction in reading
  • Field data collection on school enrolment, attendance, faculty, in-school coaching, book inventories
  • PEA observation and coaching of in-school coaches for improved reading instruction
  • Numerous telephone and face-to-face interviews with educators

To conduct these assessments, Infonex Malawi has deployed and managed multiple field teams of monitors or assessors for extended periods in visits to randomized national samples of schools across Malawi.

Assessment and survey results are critically analyzed and extensively reported on schedule in professional study reports and briefs. Presentations (PPTs) of results are prepared to brief busy policy- and decision-makers on key findings and recommendations distilled from the full reports.

Most recently, Infonex closely supported USAID’s MERIT Activity and the National Reading Programme of the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology in implementing distance training of public school educators nationwide during COVID-19. Infonex compiled a complete dataset of mobile numbers of all head teachers and section heads nationwide to receive interactive voice response (IVR) messaging calls and conducted 3 follow-up telephone surveys of participants to assess activity coverage and participant feedback and satisfaction with this distance training. Study reports of this activity are now in preparation.
